Large-scale projects aimed at modernizing Azerbaijan’s water supply and water management infrastructure are planned to be implemented. The construction of 28 new water reservoirs across the country is reflected in the “State Program for 2026–2035 on improving water supply, rainwater, and wastewater systems in the city of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula,” approved today by President Ilham Aliyev.
The State Program aims to ensure more efficient management of water resources in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula amid rapid population growth, urbanization, and climate change. The construction of new reservoirs will contribute to the protection of existing water resources, balanced distribution of reserves, and uninterrupted water supply.
According to the document, the project will not be limited solely to the construction of water reservoirs. It also envisages the full modernization of drinking water disinfection and treatment systems. The application of advanced technologies, alignment of water quality indicators with international standards, and improvement of access to safe drinking water for the population are among the key priorities.
In addition, within the framework of the State Program, comprehensive measures are planned to upgrade rainwater and wastewater systems, reduce the risks of flooding and waterlogging, and enhance the sustainability of urban infrastructure. These measures are intended to preserve ecological balance and improve the quality of life in urban environments.
It should be noted that the State Program covering 2026–2035 is designed to ensure the long-term strategic development of the country’s water sector, facilitate the phased resolution of existing challenges, and strengthen water security for future generations.
