Apple introduced its next-generation M6 processor and an updated Mac mini powered by the new chip on August 25, 2026. The new processor is designed to deliver significant improvements in artificial intelligence workloads, on-device AI models, software development, and professional workflows. During the same launch, Apple also refreshed the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.
One of the most important innovations of the M6 is that it is Apple’s first chip manufactured using 2-nanometer process technology. A smaller manufacturing process allows Apple to improve performance and energy efficiency while fitting more computing capability into the same chip area.
The M6 features a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a new-generation Neural Engine. It is designed to provide higher performance than the previous M5 generation, particularly in demanding multi-core workloads.
The chip also supports up to 32 GB of unified memory, making it better suited for running larger AI models directly on the device without relying entirely on cloud infrastructure.
One of Apple’s main areas of focus with the new generation is on-device AI, meaning artificial intelligence workloads can be processed directly on the Mac.
The M6 architecture includes dedicated Neural Accelerators within its GPU cores. This is intended to improve performance in tasks such as running local AI models, generating or editing images with AI, developing AI agents, and automating complex workflows.
This approach can also provide privacy benefits because certain data can be processed locally instead of being sent to external cloud servers.
