Portugal has taken an important step in the field of artificial intelligence by introducing the country’s first open-source AI model. The model, called “Amalia”, is named after Portugal’s famous fado singer Amalia Rodrigues. The project was developed with the participation of Portuguese universities and research institutions and was carried out with government support.
The main goal of the new artificial intelligence model is to create an accessible, transparent and local technological foundation for government institutions, businesses and researchers. The model and its training data are provided under an open-source license, allowing researchers and companies to study and apply the technology more easily.
The “Amalia” project is considered one of the steps aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on U.S. technologies in the field of artificial intelligence. Recently, France, Germany and other European countries have also been working to develop their own local AI models.
The model’s initial areas of application include virtual museum guides, digital assistants for public services, educational tools and decision-support systems in the naval sector. Experts state that such open-source AI models may accelerate automation in both public administration and business processes in the future.
