What makes GPT-5.6 Sol different?

OpenAI Introduces the GPT-5.6 Model Family: Sol, Terra and Luna Released

OpenAI has announced its latest major development in artificial intelligence. The new GPT-5.6 model family promises improved performance in programming, scientific research, cybersecurity, design and the automation of professional workflows.

The GPT-5.6 family includes three models designed for different purposes: Sol, Terra and Luna. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol is the most powerful model in the family, Terra offers a balance between cost and performance for everyday tasks, while Luna is designed as a faster and more affordable option.

What makes GPT-5.6 Sol different?

GPT-5.6 Sol has been developed for complex and long-running tasks. The model has been improved in areas such as writing and reviewing software code, conducting research, preparing documents, solving scientific problems, operating computer applications and handling cybersecurity-related tasks.

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol is one of the most capable coding models the company has developed so far. The model can reportedly complete tasks using fewer tokens and lower computational costs, making it more efficient than previous GPT models.

The new model is not limited to generating text and code. GPT-5.6 can create presentations, documents and spreadsheets, analyse a provided design example and produce new materials that follow the same visual style.

It is also designed to detect and correct visual and functional issues in generated interfaces and documents.

AI agents will be able to work in parallel

Alongside GPT-5.6, OpenAI has introduced a new Ultra mode for complex tasks. This mode allows several artificial intelligence agents to work simultaneously on separate parts of the same assignment.

For example, one agent may conduct research, another may perform calculations, while a third agent prepares the final document or presentation. The results are then combined into a single response.

OpenAI says this approach can help users complete long and multi-stage tasks more quickly.

Where will GPT-5.6 be available?

The GPT-5.6 model family is being gradually introduced across ChatGPT, Codex and the OpenAI API.

GPT-5.6 Sol will be available to eligible paid-plan users in standard ChatGPT conversations. Terra and Luna are expected to be offered mainly through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the OpenAI API.

According to the API pricing announced by OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.

For Terra, the corresponding prices are $2.50 and $15, while Luna costs $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens.

AI is moving from answering questions to performing real work

The introduction of GPT-5.6 demonstrates a new direction in the development of artificial intelligence systems.

Next-generation models are no longer being developed only as chatbots that respond to user questions. They are increasingly becoming professional tools capable of operating software, analysing documents, writing code, reviewing results and independently managing multi-stage tasks.

The GPT-5.6 family is expected to accelerate workflows for companies, programmers, analysts, designers and researchers.

However, the real-world reliability and effectiveness of the models will become clearer after they are adopted and tested more widely.
